Painting Your Home Without Tears

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Enjoy your home improvement projects, there is certainly no need for tesrs

If You Want To decorate a room having never attempted anything this big in the past.Read these few helpful suggestions first. I’m sure you know many people who will offer suggestions as you proceed.

If the room is small, then lighter colours make it appear larger. If it is a bigger room, then you can put more intense colours on the walls without feeling hemmed in. Likewise, if the room does not get too much light, then, the place can be brightened by using lighter coloures with an eggshell finish. Try not to use white, though, it tend to look cold and clinical - and it looks grubby very quickly. Another reason to use eggshell paint is that it does accept the occasional wipe down. an important consideration when you have youn children.

Having searched though all those colour charts, and made your colour choice, the next decision is whether to employ a contractor to do the work or do it yourself. If you are going to  do it yourself, the easiest option is to paint the walls (and windowframes and doors). It is also a lot less expensive than wallpaper so if you find you hate the finished product it is less of a disaster.

Preparation is the key to a good finish. Clear the space of as much furnisher as possible before you start. Cover the rest with at least two layers of cloth. This applies to carpets too. Wash the walls and woodwork thoroughly using a slightly caustic solution in order to remove the accumulated grease and grime. Next fill any small holes or cracks in wall with filler, several layers may be required for larger holes. The filler will usually shrink as it dries. When the plaster is thoroughly dry (at least 24 hours,) rub it down thoroughly with sandpaper  so it is very smooth. Next, use sandpaper rub down all the woodwork. Make sure the woodwork is smooth and dust free, where possible cutting right back to bare wood.

It is generally better to work from the top down. Paint the ceiling first. Wait until it fully dry before starting on anything else. Next place masking tape at the very edge of the ceiling so that you get a very straight line when you paint the walls. Do not leave the masking tape on for to long, it will be difficult to get off without damaging your newly painted ceiling.

Using rollers rather than brushes for the large areas will usually give a more uniform finish. To get good coverage and depth in the finish, you may need to use several coats when using a roller, even so you will still use less paint than if you use a paintbrush, it will dry faster, go on much faster and therefore, even though you are applying more than one coat it will still be faster.

Now for the woodwork. Again, mask the walls where they meet the woodwork. Then using a small paintbrush give the woodwork an undercoat. The undercoat will help the top coat to adhere better and will therefore last longer. It also gives a much smoother final finish if the undercoat is lightly sanded. It is normal to use gloss paint on woodwork. This washes easier and takes the considerable amount of touching that woodwork gets. Trying to paint too thick a coat can produce a poor finish. Far better to apply two thin coats. Be sure your first coat of paint is properly dry before applying a second coat.

To save you having to repeatedly wash your brushes every time you stop painting, you can wrap your brushes tightly in clingfilm. It prevents air getting to them and will stop them drying out. Even after you have thoroughly cleaned your brushes, it is still useful to wrap your brushes. There are always occasions when you need to make good you decorations after disasters, so always keep any left over paint

Always open windows slightly before painting the frames. There’s nothing worse that painting a window frame and then finding you can’t open the window!  This also applies to doors. When painting doors, the rule is that you paint those parts of the frame that can be seen when it is open. Or in the case of an inward opening door, when it is closed.

And finally. Don’t rush at this. Enjoy watching your room turn into the space which you have always wanted. Home improvement should be enjoyable. If you find you have hated every minute of it, then next time you want a rooom painted, save up to pay somebody else to do it for you. If you don’t enjoy the process, then you will tend to rush and skimp the work and the end result will not be so good.

If you’re having difficulty trying to find contractors for your home improvement project. A good place to start is looking on the web where you can find a multitude of helpful websites.

Remodeling Your Home? Here Are Some Tips

Normal 0

By Jim Nettleton

There comes a time for most homeowners when they get tired of their décor, or need to make overdue repairs, or a combination of both. If remodeling or renovating is in your future, here are a few guidelines. Much more can be found at my home remodeling site, which can be accessed through the link in my resource box below.

Organizing Your Remodeling

Devise a thorough plan. Whenever you decide to renovate your home, start by creating a realistic plan that includes a schedule of every task you plan to undertake. Since you are improving the house to make it a better place to live in for your family, their comfort comes first. If a certain room needs more time to work on, allot spare rooms for the family to shift to, till the renovation is over. For instance, if you are remodeling the kitchen, make sure you have necessary provisions to cook food in another room or even outside.

Starting Point

That would be the flooring. Always start from the floor, as it is the ‘base’ of the home. For instance, you can add a gingham-painted border to your wooden floor. The pricing for this could be expensive or affordable, depending on the amount of floor space and the artisan fees. You can also consider oriental rugs and carpets that lend an extra tinge of drama to the entrance of your home.

Decorating And Renovating Small Rooms

Avoid using warm colors like red, as they will make a small room seem even more small. Since bright colors make a room seem more spacious, go in for colors like light blue and light green. Usually shades of white and cream look great with “graduations” of accent colors. If you have a white sofa then you can visualize three shades of rosy pink pillows against it. Use light color for the ceiling. You can use large patterns in accessories like pillows and throws, but use smaller patterns for wallpaper and furniture. Simply hang a framed mirror on one of the walls and notice the change in ambience. A modest dining area will appear much larger than the actual size with judicious placement of a mirror.

Rooms With Low Ceilings

One of the simplest tricks in the books is to paint the ceiling. Cool colors are probably the best option. They give your ceiling the far away look. You can choose any attractive color to flaunt the ceiling. If you want to add spice to the make over, approach a specialist who can then help to create a low ceiling in the shape of a dome. Apart from making the ceiling look much higher, it will also add to the décor of the home.

Hiring A Contractor

If you’re not a seasoned do-it-yourself sort, consult friends and relatives who have had work done relatively recently and get their recommendations. Then surf the net and find out what members of the various trade councils are in your vicinity. Another good source is a local lumberyard, since workers and management there will always know reputable contractors. Interviewing prospective contractors on the phone is a good start on your quest for finding the best contractor for your home. Ask for references. No reputable contractor will be hesitant to supply them.

Easy Ideas for Energy Efficient Landscaping

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

A pretty backyard can only go so far. Many experts have proven that energy efficient landscaping that takes into consideration energy needs, may well save a family more then 30% of their usual heat or cooling costs - either in the winter or summer. These savings could tangibly translate to almost $250 worth of savings in a year.

So what are some of these “easy” ideas?  We have listed a few below that won’t require the use of an expensive landscape architect.

Keep the Sun Out

You may live in the southern most part of the country where summer days are long, hot and very dry.  On the other hand, you may live in the north where the winters are long, very cold and brutal and the days are short.  The type of landscape you have surrounding your home can make a huge difference.  You may need large shade trees to protect your home’s walls from the sun’s rays or you may want the sun to warm your home for as much of the day as possible.

You can protect your home from the sun’s hot rays by a shade landscaping design, planting large shade trees on the south and west side of your home.  Of course on the flip side, if you want your home to be warmer in the long winter months you would want to do just the opposite, creating large open areas so that the sun can naturally warm the home.

By planting deciduous trees that will lose their leaves during the fall this will also allow the sun to heat the exterior walls of your home as well as the cement patio, pathways and foundation.

Adding Protection from the Wind

A cold winter wind seeping into the home can rapidly cause a temperature drop.  This will also be reflected in your next energy bill.

Ask your local nursery expert about using trees as wind breaks and which trees would be the best as well as fast growing.  Some of the more sturdy walls or fences can also be excellent wind breaks.

Keep the Heat or Cool In

One of the primary culprits in the wasting of energy is the heat or cool that escapes through the home’s roof, windows and doors. It is imperative to find a way to keep heat or cool air inside the home.

The best way to achieve this is by planting shrubbery around the home’s foundations. This creates a dead air barrier, keeping the heat and cool inside the home where it matters. Experts have suggested widening the distance between the shrubbery and the house’s walls in order to increase this area for dead air.

The end result of your planning should be not only a beautifully landscaped yard, but one that is also energy efficient.  Energy effiecient landscaping will save you money and one you can enjoy for years to come.

Tips to Help You Create the Most Alluring Landscape

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

A patch of green adjacent to your home— a great idea indeed! It’s a refreshing dream that every urban dweller loves to cherish! But few of them get to the job for fulfilling this dream; or rather they don’t just dare to undertake a landscaping project out of the fear that the task may turn out to be too imposing to handle.

But believe me; it is not going to be that exorbitant that you are imagining! What you need are the right tips, and it’s just a matter of few weekends’ efforts and you get your private heaven ready right at your threshold!

Don’t get nervous just because you are a novice at the job of landscaping; go by our tips and your pro-looking landscape is just few weeks away.

Plan well

Irrespective of the size or type of a project, the secret of success lies in good planning and planning needs great deal of research.

  • As it is said, landscaping is the combination of both scientific knowledge and great aesthetic sense, a good deal of research can supply you with the practical information about ideal plants type for the type of the soil and climate in your area, local wind patterns, the requirement of irrigation and so on.
  • Also roam around a bit in the public gardens as well as in your neighborhood to get more design ideas.
  • You might have your own visualization about your dream landscape. Now blend your dreams with your new found knowledge to create the most alluring garden in the neighborhood.

Weave it around a focal point

Pick out a focal point for your landscaping project and then spin the entire design around it. It offers the viewer the right perspective. Such elements as a fountain, a stone statue, a birdfeeder, a solarium and even an old big tree in the middle of the lawn can serve the purpose of a focal point to give a natural flow to your landscaping efforts.

Follow consistency in the use of shapes and lines

For the right visual impact, use the shapes consistently in your garden. These govern the viewer’s eye movements and as such your aim will be to draw the viewer’s attention to the focal point.

  • As for example, if the garden has a natural poodle in the middle, design the beds and pathways in meandering lines to naturally flow with the spirit of a curvy water body.
  • If you want a British style landscaping with a more formal look, make more use of the straight lines and geometric shapes instead.

Make sure, the landscape appears attractive all through the four seasons

It is practical to choose the plants cautiously so that you have the shrubs in full bloom through the summer, autumn and fall. Make sure your landscape has some elements to withstand the chill of winter and offers something to look at.

  • So combine deciduous shrubs and evergreen trees in your design.
  • While deciduous plants add to the variety, the evergreens with their bloom and foliage offer year long continuity.

Choose the right landscape edging

Use the edging to make the right design statement; the proper edging not only provides your garden the necessary framing, it also gives a finished look to the greenery.

A last tip: your landscaping project must suit your lifestyle. Before getting started, keep in mind that some plants require more attention while others thrive with little attention. So ask yourself first how much time and efforts you are going to invest in your landscape. If you are a novice, start with a few easy to grow varieties.

Completing Yard Work Around A Patio

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

patio cover kits

If you want your garden to look good, you have to do a little landscaping. The same goes when you landscape around a teak patio so there is always something new to show to your guests.

The materials that you will use for your patio will include both soft and hard materials. The soft ones are namely the plants, the shrubs and the trees. They can be placed on the exterior perimeter of the patio while you use hard materials such as brick, concrete, rock, stone and tiles inside.

So you have an idea what plants to buy later on, it is best to check the condition of the soil since this will determine what type of flowers will survive these conditions.

As a rule of thumb for landscaping around a patio, start working on the insides of the patio then make your way outwards.

When choosing an area for the patio, make sure that this will be done on a flat area of land. Once you have found it, you must first build forms to be able to add height to the patio perimeter. This is important to achieve the foundational support you will need later on. This should be done evenly up to your doorway.

To prevent any incidents of tripping, you should smoothen the edges and make sure that there are no nails sticking out from the sides of the patio.

Once the forms have been completed for the patio, this is the time that you can add curves by using a bender board made from plastic so it can be moved very easily. To keep these in place, you will have to add stakes every 12 to 18 inches.

When it is ready, this is time that you put the stones in. These should be placed one by one so everything will fit nicely into place.

Once the patio is complete, adding flowers, gnomes, or shrubs to make it all look more colorful and eye catching. You may choose to use one color or mix this among several. The important thing is that it looks good.

Those who don’t want to plant flowers around the patio can still add color by using potted plants. You can buy these pots in different colors and designs from the store.  The advantage of using this is that you can move them to different locations and during the winter, they can be placed indoors then brought out again during the spring.

Either way, you can choose plants that bloom during different times of the year so there is always something that stands out all season long. Keep in mind the amount of sun required for each and every one of them.

You should also get plants of different heights so there is a smooth transition from the patio all the way up to the house. If there are budget constraints, get the smaller ones since these are cheaper. It will just some time before they mature unlike the older plants that are almost ready to bloom.

For decoration purposes to your patio, look to adding patio cover kits.

Landscaping around the patio is no different than fixing one section of the house. Once you have a plan, it will be very easy to implement. If you are not happy, don’t be afraid to make some changes so it will look better than it did before.

Solar Powered Landscape Lighting: The First Step to a Perfect Summer Evening

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Summer is for evening parties and what can be better venue than your backyard lawn for hosting a cozy gathering with your friends? Proper lighting plays a key role in the success of such parties.

Now the question is: what do you mean by the term, proper lighting? Here are four main points to consider:

  • The light should adequately illuminate the place, so that your guests can sit or move around comfortably. This is the functional side of your landscape lighting scheme.
  • On the aesthetic side, the lighting should be such that it rightly accentuates the beauty of the landscape.
  • More importantly, the lighting should be power efficient.
  • The wireless lighting offers a fuss-free way of installation, and that make them more suitable for outdoor use.

Solar powered landscape lighting is one that helps you meet with all these criteria in one.

  • Solar powered landscape lights offer you the most energy efficient solution. They are virtually free, as they need nothing but clean energy from the sun to run.
  • With solar powered landscape lighting, you are not only cut benefit on the personal plain by saving on energy bills, at the same time you are making valuable contribution in conserving precious environmental resources.
  • It may sound unbelievable, but you will need as little as twenty seconds to install a solar powered light in your outdoor space. Spare fifteen minutes more and you are done with the task of illuminating the entire outdoor space for enjoyment after sundown.
  • With no wiring required, solar powered landscape lighting can be installed even by an inexperienced homeowner. Your task almost ends with locating the proper place of installation of light; after that all you need to do is just plant them in the ground, without needing any cumbersome wiring.
  • In case you need some alteration with your original scheme, it is easy to just pick the lighting fixtures up and replace them.
  • You don’t have to compromise on the aesthetic side too; these solar powered lights are available in variety of styles starting from decorative lanterns to accent lights.

What makes a basic solar light?

  • In a solar powered landscape light, the source of illumination is an LED lamp that is expected to withstand 10,000 hours of usage.
  • The solar panels are made of photo cells that charge up the battery from solar power.
  • The solar panels need to receive enough sunlight during the day, so that you can get illumination throughout the evening. The rechargeable batteries provide about 8 hours of light at a stretch.
  • These lights come with built-in light sensors that work for automatic turning on and off of the lamp.

Ideas for creative use of solar powered landscape lights

You have worked hard to give the desired shape to create your dream landscape; now is the time of finishing touch. Add the final polish with a stylish lighting scheme.

  • First locate the places in your garden that requires lighting and use different types of lights for different areas.
  • If you happen to have a pond in your plot, use floating lantern style lamps for an unusual look.
  • In the sitting areas or in the places where foods are served, place the table top solar powered lanterns.
  • It is equally important to lit up driveways and pathways; use pole lamps or pedestal style lanterns here.  Pole lamps are also ideal for illuminating the patios and decks.
  • The solar powered accent lights are also available to decorate the rock sculptures or other architectural attractions in the garden.
  • Use footlights in the corners of edging and fences for a dramatic ambience. For the same effect, you can hide the source of light behind the bushes to bring about a silhouetted view.

In the end here are some useful facts about solar powered landscape light that may help in your selection.

  • Solar lights come both with ornamented outdoor fixtures, and without them. Select the type according to your plan of using them.
  • Your local garden store can be a great source of solar powered landscape lighting options. If you want to spark off the imagination a little more, surf the internet; the online stores are the ideal place for finding out the products that you are looking for.

Cedar Fences in Massachusetts - A Insider’s Guide by Alan Bates

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

There are a lot of different types of wood fence that you may see in the Boston area. For example, you’ll see a lot of cedar privacy fencing in suburban yards. However, in the city proper you’ll see smaller yards, more distinctive architecture and different types of fencing to mesh with these conditions. In Boston, you’ll see a little less fencing than you will in many other cities. Why? Well, while Boston has the fifth highest population density among major U.S. cities, it also is small in terms of land mass ? third smallest, in fact! However, the classic and timeless look which only a wood fence can achieve lends itself perfectly to this, a city with so much history that it’s there to be found around every corner.

Once you’re ready to build a cedar fence, you need to figure out what style fits you and your neighborhood. In suburban Boston, you can put up really any kind of fence you want; though the stockade picket fence is the most popular. Also common in suburban areas is 6′ cedar privacy fencing. Both of these fences are more commonly seen with newer construction. Older colonial homes, on the other hand, are better suited by more traditional fencing ? as are newer homes which emulate their look.

In Boston, fence decisions are dependent on the opinions of the owner. The brownstones seen in many neighborhoods often have low picket fences to delineate property lines while keeping the feeling of a tight knit community (a trademark of many Boston neighborhoods) intact. In backyard Boston wood fencing, though, you’ll see both the low picket fencing common to the front of homes as well as tall basketweave privacy fences which can create a private space even in the most densely populated of urban areas.

Based on homeowners who have located Boston wood fence contractors to build their fencing, we can give you a good idea of how much you’ll pay to have a wood fence built. In the Boston area, the cost for most wood fence installation by contractors we work with is somewhere between $1,000 and $4,000, with $2,500 being the average cost with materials and labor. The job generally took a speedy two weeks, with four weeks being the slowest and eight days the fastest. Naturally, the longer the job takes, the more expensive it will tend to be.

So what does all of this mean to you as a homeowner in the Grater Boston area? It’s pretty good news, as it happens. Boston wood fencing prices are consistent across the board in this area, so if you find a good contractor to build you fence and know what to ask for; you’ll get a good value for your money ? and a good wood fence. And what should you ask for? Wood which can stand up to the hot, humid summer and cold, wet winters of New England, with all of its Nor’easters and offshore storms. Cedar is the best wood to use; its natural oils repel moisture, making it a good choice for the tough weather of the Boston area.

If you want a cedar fence to stay looking its best and protected from weather damage, you should treat it every five to ten years; a small price to pay for a wood fence which looks great and will last. If you don’t use cedar, pressure treated lumber is the next best option. Be certain to sustain it if you want it to last for a long time however. Lastly, always do your research into any wood fence contractor you’re thinking of using and evaluate their track record. It may take a little of your time, but it’s well worth it for a fence which will hold up over the long run.

Flipping Houses for Profit

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Wide plank flooring

For those of you who watch on the edges of your seats week after week as people on cable television seek to successfully turn a lump of coal of a house into a diamond that is suitable for kings and queens of the middle class to call home, it is quite possible that you have considered ‘flipping’ a home of your own. With proper planning, this is a good way to make a substantial profit in real estate quickly.

Believe it or not, when done correctly and within reasonable time and budget constraints, projects such as this can be a great challenge that is also a ton of fun. First of all, the average citizen isn’t allowed to play with power tools on a regular basis and Tim Allen has taught us exactly how fun power tools can be. Keep in mind that he has also taught us just how dangerous they can be as well. The point is that it is often fun to learn new things and for many of us, working with power tools is a new thing. Experienced power tool users can have a great time at work when flipping real estate homes.

Even if power tools aren’t exactly your cup of tea, perhaps you have always wanted to try your hand at creating a color scheme or a trial run at renovating a kitchen or bathroom. Beyond a great way to have fun while turning a profit, a house flip can be a great practice session for changes you’d like to make within your own home. Most of us learn best by making mistakes. Isn’t it best to make mistakes with Formica or Corian (r) rather than the granite countertops we’d prefer in our own kitchens and baths?

This also gives you the opportunity to see how things you are considering for your home look in other homes before incorporating them into your home. If you are considering a certain type of kahrs wood flooring, try it in a house that you are flipping. Oak hardwood flooring is a great way to upgrade your home rather inexpensively and make the home look like new. This is the ultimate opportunity to use trial and error when making design and décor plans for your own home. The fact that you can work at making a profit should be enough motivation.

Another fun thing about flipping real estate is that you often get the opportunity to work with the people you love. This is a great opportunity to get friends and family involved in the process of creating a masterpiece right by your side. The price for their time and labor is often some good music, a tasty pizza, and a couple of cold sodas (or beers provided the work is done for the day and everyone is walking home of course).

Children can help out with these projects, but be careful when they are handling paint brushes and keep them away from power tools. Typically have older children help with landscaping projects and find someone to care for younger children (the tools, fumes, and temptations for small children simply may prove too risky to be practical).

Kitchen Remodel Jobs Made Fun and Easy

Monday, October 27th, 2008

If you are fed up with the existing paint job you have in your kitchen, why not consider a kitchen remodel job? It can make a world of difference to your home! A well-done kitchen remodel can even up the resale value of your home, or just make you feel more comfortable in your surroundings. So, if it is time for an update to your kitchen, for any reason, consider a complete or even partial kitchen remodel to suit your needs. Home improvement is an integral part of owning your own home. Over time you will find that things experience wear and tear, and need to just be replaced.

You will find that a kitchen remodel will be one of the home improvements that gets really noticed. You can do something as simple as changing the color of the walls, or perhaps putting up some wallpaper. The addition of new tiles to your kitchen can transform it into a kitchen that looks brand new, and it won’t even run you that much. Some countertops can also have a significant impact on the look of your kitchen and give it a brand new feel also. If you’ve got the cash on hand, you might even go so far as purchasing all-new appliances after your kitchen remodel is done. This way, you will be able to rid yourself of old, borrowed, or mix-matched refrigerator and stove, then hand-pick one which best matches the layout and design of the new kitchen. Having new windows put in, or even a sliding glass door, will make a big difference not only in appearance, but also in heating and cooling bills, amount of light allowed into the home, and cross breezes that might flow through can be welcome additions. Ceiling fans will also help circulate air and neutralize odors that might linger after cooking meals.

Any of these options is viable when you are thinking of remodeling the kitchen area. Whichever way you go about it, and whether or not you really mean to, you will certainly improve your home’s resale value after getting any kind of remodeling done. The kitchen is definitely not an exception. Be sure, though, to research beforehand and select contractors who will offer fair prices and will be trustworthy.
