Example of hidden deck fastner installation

Few people realize that it's not just about maintaining your deck after it's built that prevents your deck from splitting, splintering, cupping, or rotting. It's also about constructing your deck with the proper materials.

Most decks built in the past 25 yers have used the simplest deck building material, galvanized nails, to keep the boards attached to the structure. In fact, contractors have used nails like this for generations and thought very little about other options.  Now, stainless steel hidden deck fasteners are becoming more popular and even have power tools to help simplify their installation.

Out of all the fasteners on the market TigerClaw by far, is the most popular.  You see, TigerClaw Fasteners were created by a contractor frustrated with the expense and intensive labor of other hidden fastening systems. Every box includes a free installation block. With this, these fasteners will install faster and easier than other comparable fasteners. With all work done from the top, you can save more on labor costs than compared with other hidden fastener installations.

Strength and durability are assured since they are built from heavy gauge stainless steel. TigerClaw hidden deck fasteners give outstanding hold-down power for both man made decking materials & natural wood. They allow the beauty of the wood to be preserved and reduce splitting, splintering, cupping and rotting.

The concept of a nail free deck surface is one that is also aesthetically pleasing. With many new composites and clear-grained wood decking available, defacing a smooth, even deck surface with unwanted rows of screws or nails is becoming increasingly unwanted.

I know a growing number of contractors are aware of hidden deck fasteners, but the majority aren't. This article's objective is to raise consumer awareness about hidden deck fasteners and their benefits.

With hidden deck fasteners, you can create an improved, longer lasting, safer deck at an affordable price.  Their’s even an easy TigerClaw estimator tool to help you figure out how much these fasteners would cost to use on your deck. What's preventing you from choosing hidden deck fasteners over nails now?

Here are a handful of items to keep in mind when building a long lasting wooden deck:

When constructing a deck or other outdoor wooden structure use natuarally decay resistant lumber or treated lumber. Don't allow untreated wood posts or lumber to rest directly on concrete.
* Clean joints between deck boards or between a deck and any other structure so dirt & debris won't hold moisture.
* Downspouts and water run-off should be guided away from the deck
* Potted plants resting on the deck or porch can cause moisture pooling; likewise, plants and shrubs planted nearby can contribute to moisture and water buildup on and around your wooden deck. Make sure that watering tools (hoses, sprinklers, etc..) not spray the deck.
* Ensure that the underside of the porch breathes properly, it is critical to maintain airflow. To prevent moisture buildup the under space should not be completely sealed.
* Don't let leaves, barbeque grill covers, etc…. layout on your deck for extended periods. This promotes moisture & it's best friend mold to develop underneath.
* Add stains and sealers before the deck looks like it’s needing it.  Create a schedule once a year where you add the sealer so it's consistently apllied before the wood starts looking dried out. These can treat the wood and prevent moisture from leading to rot
* If you have a 2nd story deck over a ground floor deck, make sure you get an underdeck drainage system to prevent additional wear to the bottom deck. This also allows your bottom deck to feel like a covered porch on rainy days, and it can be used as an additional living space.

I'm sure these ideas help you keep your wooden deck beautiful for many years to come. We look forward to your feedback.

Three Benefits Of Flat Roofs That Make Them The Number One Choice

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Roofing is one of the things people give the last thought to when constructing their home. Since traditional roofing is what is always seen, nearly everyone utilizes this sort of roof for their building projects. However, what more people should take into account is the option of flat roofing for their buildings. Flat roofs are seldom given consideration due to the fact that they are rarely seen and are not as widespread as regular roofing, yet they pose several benefits that would make one think of procuring this type of roofing for their homes.

You Can Use The Area On The Roof

Though they are called as such, flat roofs are not completely flat. These have a slight slope that permits water to run off during rains. This prevents leaks and pooling of water on your roof. Flat roofs have one evident aspect: their nearly horizontal inclination. This aspect of flat roofs causes it to be the most cost-efficient, as all plausible room space is fully made use of both over and under the roof.

Inclined roof structures create dead, useless area inside the home, therefore not maximizing the area of the house. Flat roofs take full advantage of the available space of the home, as structures like wooden beams or any equivalent are hardly essential. The majority of flat roofs are likewise transformed into terraces or roof gardens, creating additional areas or spaces that one can make use of in their homes.

Flat Roofs Require Less Work To Put up

An additional gain of getting a flat roof is that it is easy to construct. Flat roofs use a very minimal amount of material given that their surface area is smaller than that of inclined roofs. They also require less work, which aids in cutting construction costs down.

Less Expensive In The Long Run

Life expectancy for flat roofs varies with the material used and the maintenance extended to it. As detailed at flat roofing this type of roofing demands yearly inspections. Using first-rate flat roof materials would involve spending a tad more than you would on traditional flat roof material, but, in the long run, it is still less expensive than what you’d normally fork out on a sloping roof.

There are also a large amount of coatings and roof treatments offered these days that increase the longevity of the flat roof - see epdm roof for more details. One of the most appealing and effective procedures is making use of a layer of topsoil and grass. This green roof traps moisture and water and is kept up by the plants, preventing the pooling of water on the roof surface, which could cause leaks and cracks. This green roof method, aside from being an aesthetically-pleasing add-on to your home, also helps retain moisture, which helps throughout the very hot seasons.

Building Your Own Steam Shower

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Fortunately, you don’t have to tear up your bathroom or break the bank to build a steam shower, but

If you want to build your own steam shower or have one built for you, there are some important things that you will need to do.

Should you choose to accept it, part of your mission is to…

  • cover the roof of your shower enclosure
  • seal the enclosure with a special door
  • install a steam shower generator
  • optional: include something to sit on, like a folding or fixed bench or a tiled bench

If you decide to build a steam shower suite, which includes…

  • a shower,
  • steam jet, and
  • built in seating,

it would take up about the same amount of space as an average bathtub enclosure.

You can convert a small walk-in shower into a steam shower, but the enclosure may not turn out big enough to include a bench. That means you would not be able to relax during your steam shower. You would have to stand up the whole time.

Steam Shower Structure and Sealing

The structure

The walls and ceiling of your enclosure must be made of waterproof material such as tile, marble, granite, limestone or fiberglass.

Cover the roof

Many standard shower stall doors stop short of the ceiling by a foot or so. You’ll have to…

1) buy a lightweight acrylic dome top, or
2) install a cover made of a material like fiberglass or stainless steel.

Steam condenses, so the ceiling should be sloped or curved. If the shower ceiling is flat, condensed water will constantly drip down on you.

Believe me, it’s not pleasant when a few of those drops hits you in the eye when you’re trying to relax and enjoy the moment.

Seal It

Your enclosure needs to be sealed very tight. If water vapor escapes, it will ruin drywall, paint, or wallpaper.

You’ll also have to deal with rotting problems if steam is allowed to penetrate into your walls, ceiling and floor.

That would not be good.

Home steam showers are meant for enjoyment, not ruining bathrooms.

You can’t have a vapor-tight enclosure without the right kind of door. Manufacturers sell steam shower doors in a variety of styles and colors.

Now, what about the steam?

If you want to build a steam shower, obviously you’re going to need something to produce the steam, right? So…

You’ll have to install a steam generator.

You might need a plumber and electrician for this job. The generator needs to be connected to the water line and a 240V line voltage.

Deciding where to place your steam shower generator can potentially be one of your biggest design challenges.

Steam showers are growing in popularity because people really enjoy the relaxation that they provide.

After all, it’s a great option to be able to come home after a busy day or a tough workout and unwind in your very own steam shower.

Kitchen Carpet Cleaning

Monday, June 1st, 2009

A spill on the kitchen carpet can be anything from a child’s cup falling off the table to muddy footprints around the room.  Properly dealing with the kitchen carpet cleaning is what seperates the professionals from everyone else.

With a little bit of common knowledge, many of the spills that occurs can be cleaned up and corrected fast and easily.  Knowing how to react to spills in the kitchen are what makes things easier than ever.

The first thing to do, is use a bit of common sense. Its important for you to take very quick action and be smart about the first steps you take in cleaning up your kitchen carpet spill.  To put it in other terms - don’t let the spill sit.

The longer the spill or product sits on your carpet, the deeper in it will go.  A larger spill that has time to seep into the carpet and into the padding and reaches the floor boards is one type of spill that will need extensive cleaning services.  Therefore, you’ll need to move quickly and effectively.

You can take different steps to remove spills from your kitchen carpet.  One thing that remains the same throughout every spill you encounter is that you shouldn’t rub them. Most often, rubbing the spill will rub them into the carpet. This will make them less likely to come off.  Instead of rubbing, you should consider blotting.  Blotting puts small amounts of pressure on the stain to allow the cloth or paper towels to soak it up.  This
doesn’t work the stain deeper into the carpet.

As far as getting the spill out of the carpet, you can use several methods.  First, you should try and remove as much debris from the floor as possible, wiping as much as you can up.  Then, there are several routes that you can take.

If you own a carpet cleaner, this will be your best option.  Last, there are several products on
the market that you can use.  This will help when it comes to difficult spills.Unless you have
them on hand, waiting isn’t an option.  Spills in the kitchen needs to be handled in a quick and timely manner.

Since the kitchen spill happens in one of the most used rooms of the home, you’ll need to make sure that you do a great job in cleaning it up.  Because spills can happen frequently, it is important that you do a complete cleaning of the carpet on a regular basis.

Even though kitchen carpet spills are nearly impossible to prevent, you can protect yourself and your carpet by knowing what to do.  If you keep your carpet clean, you’ll have no problems cleaning up spills as they occur.
